The university originated from a donation of 5,000 talers in 1858 by the Aachener und Münchener Feuer-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft to Prince Frederick William of Prussia, who chose to found the first Prussian institute of technology in the Rhine province. After a competition among cities, Aachen won with a financing concept backed by the insurance company and local banks. Groundbreaking occurred on 15 May 1865, and lectures began on 10 October 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, with 223 students and 32 teachers, primarily to educate engineers for the Ruhr mining industry. In 1880, it was reorganized as a Royal Technical University, gaining the right to bestow Dr.-Ing. degrees in 1899 and Dipl.-Ing. titles in 1902. The first women were admitted in 1909. After severe destruction in World War II—over 70% of buildings destroyed or heavily damaged by the time Aachen capitulated on 21 October 1944—the university recovered and expanded quickly. By the late 1960s, it had 10,000 students, becoming the foremost German technical university. The founding of philosophical and medical faculties in 1965 and 1966 made it more universal, and student numbers doubled from 1970 (10,000) to 1980 (more than 25,000) and again to more than 37,000 by 1990.
