A central government directive led to a partial relocation to Xi'an, resulting in the formal separation of Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1959, with the Shanghai campus renamed Shanghai Jiaotong University. In 2024, five SJTU exchange students at the University of Michigan were charged with espionage-related offenses, leading the University of Michigan to end the partnership in January 2025.

Origins in the Westernization Movement (1896–1920)

The Guangxu Emperor approved the proposal in December of that year, and Sheng assumed the presidency. As a proponent of the Westernization Movement, Sheng envisioned an institution that would dilute the dominance of the imperial examination system and introduce a Western academic framework with a practical bent. The school initially concentrated on business and political sciences, aligning with the Self-Strengthening Movement's goals. Notably, American instructors made up roughly half the specialized faculty until returning Chinese student-educators gradually took over in the 1920s.

The Xi'an Relocation and the Birth of Two Universities (1955–1959)

Yet just one week later, the university pivoted to a dual-campus model, sending only select departments westward. The arrangement proved temporary: on July 31, 1959, the Xi'an campus was formally severed as Xi'an Jiaotong University, while the Shanghai campus received its current name—Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This split, born of political directive rather than academic choice, permanently reshaped the institutional landscape of Chinese higher education and defined the identity of both successor institutions.

It also holds membership in the C9 League, a consortium of China's most prestigious universities. The university's physical and organizational footprint is substantial—encompassing 33 schools, 12 affiliated hospitals, 2 affiliated medical research institutes, 23 directly affiliated units, and 5 directly affiliated enterprises.
